McLaren Vale is one of Australia's oldest wine regions, with vines first planted in 1838. It's a great place to explore Australia's food and wine scene. The region is best known for Shiraz and Grenache, and you can taste them at award-winning cellar doors alongside local produce from the Fleurieu Peninsula. Beyond the wine, you'll find the historic slate village of Willunga, a well-loved Saturday farmers market, galleries, relaxed cafes, and rolling vineyards that run down to the beaches at Port Willunga and Aldinga.

Cycling is a great way to see McLaren Vale. The region is about 40 km (25 mi) south of Adelaide, between the Mount Lofty Ranges and the coast. The Shiraz Trail follows an old railway line from McLaren Vale to Willunga and is a must-ride. It's about 8 km (5 mi) of flat, sealed, car-free path, so you can ride at a gentle pace and stop at cellar doors along the way. It's also part of the longer Coast to Vines Rail Trail, which you can use to link the vineyards with the seaside.

McLaren Vale has a Mediterranean climate that suits wine-making well. Sea breezes off Gulf St Vincent cool the vineyards. Summers are warm and dry, with highs around 30°C (86°F). Winters are mild, and most of the year's rain falls then.
