Interview with Bike Trail Blogger Garry
If you're a cyclist in Sydney, chances are you've heard of Garry Robinson. He runs the highly informative website,
Bike Trail Blog and Facebook group
Let's Go Cycling, and has mapped a spider's web of rides around Sydney and NSW. We picked his brain about his passion for cycling.
What’s your favourite cycling route in Sydney?
On my blog I have two different ways to cycle around Sydney. They show that you can do it without riding on roads very much. It took me three years to work them out. View the
Sydney Google Maps page.
How did your passion for cycling ignite?
Three years ago when I rode the
Otago Rail Trail. I had not ridden a bike since my 20’s. When I started riding, my back started feeling better.
What’s the ultimate cycling trip on your bucket list?
It will be doing a combination of Japanese Hot Springs, cycling and train journeys in Japan. Probably with a Brompton folding bike and hiring an e-bike for longer sections.
Possibly a controversial question: do you have a favourite cafe stop?
I have heaps of favourites. Sydney it’s
Toastettes in Stanmore. Just great jaffles. Otherwise
Rubys Cafe in Bulli on NSW’s best cycle way. Because so many cool cyclists ride past all the time.
What would you say to a first time cyclist?
Get a bike with wider tyres and an upright posture. Enjoy the ride, you don’t have to be fast.
What’s your best piece of cycling advice?
You will always have a better ride if you study the maps and the stories and pick rides that suit you. Try to plan two or three rides ahead so you have a ride for different conditions.
