The Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail, once fully complete, is set to become the longest rail trail in Australia at over 270km. While the completion of this ambitious undertaking is still many years away, there are some great sections currently available. This cycle tour is designed for the curious and those wanting to show support for the tireless volunteers who are devoted to opening up this region to cycle tourism. Your tour hosts live in the region and are members of the Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail Committee and are able to provide a wealth of information, not just of the region generally but also of the various aspects of the trail, including its particular design features and the various challenges past and present. The tour begins at the southern end where the trail follows the Burnett River most of the way into Mundubbera. Later the journey continues north of Monto with a cycle along the northern section from Kalpower to Builyan. The tour also includes a detour cycle to the historic Glassford Chimneys and a loop ride around the charming town of Monto. Then, to celebrate the end of the cycle tour enjoy a local community event ‘Tunnels by Twilight’ beginning with grazing platters to whet your appetite. The afternoon continues with an eleven kilometre cycle along a section of the northern trail through six tunnels. To finish the day enjoy a 2 course country dinner provided by the Kalpower hall committee. This tour is designed to link the benefits of cycle tourism to local communities and the final night dinner expresses that ambition very well.

Itinerary

You will need to make your own way to Murgon this afternoon and check in to your first accommodation. Your tour hosts will meet with the group in the evening to outline the tour ahead. Overnight: Murgon.

Meals:  Nil

Today will start with a transfer from Murgon to Gayndah to begin your cycle. The cycle journey begins today just north of Gayndah at Reid’s Creek where we pick up the first open section of the Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail, BBIRT. The trail follows a largely riverside rail alignment to the township of Mundubbera (38km). Once complete the BBIRT at 270km will be the longest rail trail in Australia and on this cycle journey you’ll get a good insight into the aspirations of the dedicated volunteers who welcome and get motivation from the early visitors who cycle along the sections currently open. This southern section follows the Burnett River along many stretches and is characterised by the iconic railway bridges. Interestingly, it is said the chief engineer encouraged different engineering design proposals for each bridge. You’ll arrive in the township of Mundubbera which is a bit of a fruit bowl town producing a range of fruit including blueberries, pecans, mangoes, avocados, lychees, peaches, nectarines, watermelons, rockmelons and citrus. After stopping for a pub lunch at a classic inland Queensland hotel, it's off to the northern town of Monto where you can choose to either explore the township on your own or head out for a bushwalk to Cania Gorge. Overnight Monto. Ascent: 276m, descent: 265m

Meals:  Nil

This morning the cycle route explores the current state of the rail trail development cycling the section of the Boyne Burnett Rail Trail located north of Monto. You’ll be transferred to Barrimoon Siding to begin the Kalpowar to Builyan section, a shorter section of rail trail than the southern section, but no less impressive. It is a 30km cycle with a gentle descent which you’ll find fairly easy cycling with impressive panoramas stretching out before you, passing through 6 historic railway tunnels on your way. The day also includes a 20km detour from the trail to a long-forgotten town and mine known as the Glassford Chimneys. This was a gold and copper town in the late 1800’s well before federation or the construction of the railway to this area. The old smelter chimneys and surrounds are now heritage listed and within the Dawes National Park. The route heads back to the rail trail to cycle further north passing behind the small township of Many Peaks before arriving at the township of Builyan before being transferred back to Monto. Overnight: Monto. Ascent: 369m, descent: 593m

Meals:  L

After two days of being transferred to the trail first thing, the route today is a loop (30km) along rural backroads around Monto in the morning. Or if you prefer you can set your own itinerary for the morning. Monto was the first town in Queensland built to a town plan and has a sense of town pride. The area is predominately agricultural and famous for its beef, dairy and pork. More recently the Monto Art Trail was developed and makes for an amazing walk or bike ride. Later in the afternoon we head off to a local event, ‘Tunnels by Twilight’. This is a locally organised event that brings cyclists and the community together with an 11km twilight cycle along the northern section of the trail beginning with grazing platters to whet your appetite. Then we cycle though 6 tunnels before heading to the Kalpowar Hall, famous for its steam train mural. Here we enjoy a 2 course ‘country dinner’ provided by the hall committee. This is a great way to meet the locals and get some understanding of a rail trail development fuelled by dedicated members of the community as well as meet other cyclists who may attend this public event. Overnight: Monto. Ascent: 302m, descent: 289m

Meals:  D

Your transfer will head south from Monto through the Burnett region you have cycled over the previous 3 days. This is a road journey of around 3 hours, arriving in Murgon before lunch.

Meals:  Nil

Grading

Moderate
5

We have graded this trip as moderate and while it is not recommended to inexperienced/low skilled riders it not overly technical or challenging either. The trail is fairly undulating with a hard surface but there are a couple of short sections of sand where it is recommended you walk. Our supplied ebikes have a ‘walk’ function that allows you to walk beside the bike without needing to push the weight of the bike. On day 3 there is an optional detour (20km) to an old copper mine that does have a couple of steep pinches where the walk function may also help cover these short sections. This ride also covers a few sections of low traffic rural dirt roads that are maintained public roads of good quality.
