10 of the Best Sights to Explore in the Southern Highlands

 
Even though our trip is called the Southern Highlands Cycle, there's so much more to it than just a cycling adventure! As you'll discover in our list of the top 10 things to do in the Southern Highlands, there is an interesting variety of activities on offer that keeps our itinerary fresh and fascinating for any active traveller. The Southern Highlands is located just a couple of hours beyond Sydney and is easily accessible by public transport. Our self guided cycling trip starts in Bundanoon, where you collect your electric bike, and returns there 6 happy days later.
 
In no particular order, read on for the best things to see, do and explore in the Southern Highlands.
 

1. Morton National Park

The wonderful Morton National Park is home to amazing walking trails, gushing waterfalls, sublime gorges, and brilliant views of classic Australian rainforest. Be sure to admire the beauty of Belmore Falls and keep your eyes peeled for the many types of birds who make their sanctuary in the park, like eagles and lyrebirds. There are plenty of short hikes, such as the West Rim Walking Track, which is a 4km return trip to Fitzroy Falls. This is an easily manageable detour before hopping back on the bike to continue your Southern Highlands Cycle.
 
 
 

2. Berkelouw Book Barn

The Berkelouw Book Barn is an icon of the Southern Highlands. Located on the Bendooley Estate, the barn houses many rare and antiquated books. It operates as a bookshop by day, and includes the Bendooley Estate Restaurant and a Cellar Door where you can enjoy coffee, lunch or a glass of wine. You can find it just outside of Berrima.
 

3. Bradman Museum and International Cricket Hall of Fame

 
Cricket fans will want to pay their respects to Donald Bradman in Bowral. The Bradman Museum and International Cricket Hall of Fame is full of history, statistics, and souvenirs from Donald Bradman and cricket in general.
 

4. Sturt Gallery

Sturt Gallery outside Mittagong | <i>Kate Baker</i>
 
The Sturt Gallery, near Mittagong, is a School of Excellence in Arts, Design and Fabrication. It also showcases exhibitions in its art gallery and attracts over 30,000 visitors every year to its exhibitions, events, contemporary design retail space, café and gardens. Be sure to check out what's on when you're in town.
 

5. Burrawang Village

Cycling the quiet route to Robertson | <i>Kate Baker</i>
 
On day 4 of your cycle to Robertson, you the option to take a detour to Burrawang Village. And we recommend you take a look! Burrawang is a secluded and tranquil village with a tiny population of just 300 residents. A number of the cottages and churches in the area date back to colonial times. The local businesses are famed for their old-world charm, personal service and kind hospitality.
 

6. Robertson Pie Shop

The famous Robertson Pie Shop has been serving up piping hot baked goods since 1961, so it's safe to say they know what they're doing. Whether you're after a beef pie, chocolate eclair, or some locally produced honey, this place will fuel your cycle!
 

7. Fitzory Falls

Be sure to admire Fitzroy Falls. At 81m high, this spectacular waterfall unleashes a torrent of water over a postcard perfect Australian setting.
 

8. Exeter Cottage

Exeter is a snapshot of England in the Southern Highlands. This quaint village features some quintessential English sights, such as St Aidan's Church, a historic rail way centre, and the Exeter Cottage. Plus there are plenty of antique knick knacks to be browsed as well.
 

9. Centennial Vineyard

 
 
It would be a mistake to not stop in at this gorgeous winery setting in the Southern Highlands. The Centennial Vineyard and restaurant is the perfect break for a coffee, high tea or wine.
 

10. Berrima Historic Walk

 
 
The self guided Berrima Historic Walk is a great way to spend the evening in Berrima. It takes in the sandstone Berrima Courthouse. Along the pleasant route, you'll come across the Surveyor General Inn, which is Australia's oldest continuously licensed pub. Be rude not to pop in for a recuperative beverage!
