  • Cycle the Barossa east to west then return along the full length of the Barossa Rail Trail
  • Set your own pace and follow your own interests cycling between towns, vineyards and the great culinary options along the way

The Barossa Valley is one of Australia’s most celebrated wine regions, yet its appeal extends far beyond the cellar door. Explore the Barossa Valley by bike on this short but rewarding trip. Cycle through many notable towns such as Lyndoch, Tanunda, Nuriootpa and Angaston, as well as the iconic Barossa Rail Trail. You'll also have the chance to taste some of the delicious wines this beautiful region produces, plus you'll get to witness the fabulous old architecture and rich history this region of South Australia has to offer. With your luggage transferred, logistics sorted and accommodation booked, all you need to do is pedal your bike and enjoy.

Itinerary

This afternoon you will be picked up in Adelaide and driven to your accommodation in the Barossa Valley. You are free to relax and explore the area this afternoon. Overnight in Angaston.

Meals:  Nil

You will collect your second bike this morning and then the cycle begins from Angaston, with vineyards virtually on your doorstep with a panoramic view over Saltrams Vineyard from the rotunda at rear of the property. Saltrams history stretches back over 150 years but a pedal to the cellar door takes just a few minutes. It is a short cycle into Angaston which makes for a great breakfast stop in one of the many cafes or small bakeries with delectable delights. And, if you are looking for a bit of survival food to load into your panniers, the Barossa Valley Cheese Company in downtown Angaston has an impressive range of cheese hampers, platters and pamper packs made from local produce by former winemaker now cheesemaker Victoria McClurg. From Angaston it is a leisurely day of cycling through some of the very best South Australian wine country. You’ll cycle along country roads lined with vineyards and you'll come across both the larger well known wineries such as Yalumba and Penfolds, but also stumble upon small boutique wineries with their own appeal and special unique blends and vintages. At roughly the mid point of your cycle today is the township of Tanunda, an Aboriginal word meaning waterhole. It's also a good place to stop for lunch. You’ll be passing back through this town tomorrow so you don't have to see it all today, as there is plenty to see including the iconic Chateau Tanunda. Further north, well know celebrity chief Maggie Beer’s Farm is a popular stop and is worth the small detour. The cycle then passes through the township of Nuriootpa before heading back to Angaston along a section of the Barossa Valley Trail. Ascent 375m. Descent 375m. Overnight Angaston.

Meals:  Nil

An outstanding day today as you traverse this acclaimed wine region from east to west cycling the full length of the Barossa Trail from Angaston to Gawler just to the north of Adelaide. The trail follows sections of the old Gawler Angaston Rail line as well as purpose built cycle trails. The traditional owners of the Barossa Valley are the Indigenous Peramangk people and more recently German Lutheran settlers arriving in the Barossa Valley in 1842, settling at Bethany. In early Australian European history some Barossa towns had up to 25 German-speaking inhabitants to every English-speaking person. Much of the Germanic history survives today in the food and winemaking skills of the region. It is a region where immigrants came looking for a better life than the one they left behind and in the harsh South Australian environment created a wine industry of world standing. During your cycle journey through Barossa townships with buildings hewn from stone you get a sense of a unique history and community that is part of the fabric of a multi layered Australian society built by immigrants. You'll be exploring the region by bicycle but there is plenty of opportunity to take a gastronomic journey. From Gawler you will be transferred back to your preferred Adelaide CBD location. Ascent: 196m Descent: 451m
